South African teachers Ilke Lea Alexander, Justin Sasman and Hayley White are undertaking three months of study at the Royal Northern College of Music and will be using this blog to share their experiences with others.

Their placements are financed by ABRSM's Centenary Travel Grant fund, which covers the cost of flights, accommodation and tuition. With a focus on jazz, Ilke, Hayley and Justin will be developing their skills as musicians and teachers through a mix of one-to-one coaching, lectures, workshops and lesson observations.

Posts from students who enjoyed previous placements through ABRSM can also be found below.

A wonderful experience

I had a marvellous trip to London last week. Although I only stayed for few days, I cannot believe that so much happened in that time!

I attended the ABRSM scholar reception, getting to know many scholars from all over the world studying in different Royal Colleges, and I also went to two concerts by the Tallis Scholars, various piano recitals and performances by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The trombone master class hosted by the LSO principal trombonist Dudley Bright at the Royal College of Music was a particular highlight, and I also managed to indulge in plenty of sightseeing at the London Eye, Big Ben, Hyde Park and Tower Hill.

Life in RNCM is busy but extremely enjoyable – I have lessons every day, then I undertake two or three hours of practice, attend concerts and occasionally enjoy a relaxing drink with friends and classmates after school.

I particularly relish the unique learning atmosphere within the trombone department at the RNCM, which I have not experienced anywhere else. We have a trombone group class every week where we usually do some ensemble work and focus on an orchestral or operatic excerpt with different tutors. We learn a lot about our various strengths and weaknesses from these exercises, which is extremely useful! The tutors Simon, Benny, Rob and Roger put in a tremendous amount of effort behind the scenes. Their teaching styles vary significantly, but from them I have learnt that good teachers not only transfer musical knowledge and technical skills but also the right attitude towards learning and the desire to be a good musician. They help create a positive learning experience for their students.

I am really proud that I have been able to study here, and I hope that further students may be given the same opportunity through ABRSM in the future.
