South African teachers Ilke Lea Alexander, Justin Sasman and Hayley White are undertaking three months of study at the Royal Northern College of Music and will be using this blog to share their experiences with others.

Their placements are financed by ABRSM's Centenary Travel Grant fund, which covers the cost of flights, accommodation and tuition. With a focus on jazz, Ilke, Hayley and Justin will be developing their skills as musicians and teachers through a mix of one-to-one coaching, lectures, workshops and lesson observations.

Posts from students who enjoyed previous placements through ABRSM can also be found below.

An amazing coincidence!

Studying at the RNCM offers me an excellent opportunity to study with many prominent artists and musicians. I have found that this experience has enhanced my learning as well as my teaching.

Last week I had the pleasure of studying with Chris Houlding, a renowned conductor and performer and a very experienced teacher. He uses some very effective metaphors to present abstract concepts like breathing, air support and co-ordination of muscles and this is really effective in guiding students and assisting their understanding. At the end of the lesson we discovered that he and my teacher from Hong Kong actually studied together at the Guildhall more than 30 years ago! What a coincidence!

In addition to lessons, something that particularly excites me here is the opportunity to attend many concerts featuring world class orchestras and artists – the Halle, the BBC Philharmonic, François Leleux, Andre Schiff, the Tallis Scholars and many others – at an extremely reasonable cost! Going to concerts is always pleasant here – beyond the performances themselves, I love talking to everyone around me, regardless of age, and sharing the experience of music. The most enjoyable concert of all the ones I have been to featured the Tallis Scholars at the Cadogan Hall. This was the first time I had seen them live and I was deeply moved and impressed by the beauty and the purity of their sound. I can honestly say that this was absolutely my best ever vocal concert experience!

Finally, I would like to present my heartfelt thanks to Penny Coombes, the ABRSM Professional Development Coordinator, who is leaving her position soon. Penny has provided superb support and is not only capable and organised but very thoughtful and friendly. I have really appreciated her help throughout my time here and the friendship that we built once I arrived. I wish her all the best in the future!
