South African teachers Ilke Lea Alexander, Justin Sasman and Hayley White are undertaking three months of study at the Royal Northern College of Music and will be using this blog to share their experiences with others.

Their placements are financed by ABRSM's Centenary Travel Grant fund, which covers the cost of flights, accommodation and tuition. With a focus on jazz, Ilke, Hayley and Justin will be developing their skills as musicians and teachers through a mix of one-to-one coaching, lectures, workshops and lesson observations.

Posts from students who enjoyed previous placements through ABRSM can also be found below.

Hello!

My name is Palas Chan and I am very honoured and excited to be one of the recipients of the ABRSM Centenary Travel Grant. I offer my heartfelt thanks to ABRSM for offering me such a wonderful opportunity to study at the RNCM.

After graduating five years ago, I taught the trombone, lower brass classes and symphonic band for youths in the Music Office of the Hong Kong Government.

I found my time at the Music Office enjoyable and inspirational. I learnt that teaching is not only about transferring musical skills and knowledge but more importantly about communicating. I find that I learn a lot from spending time in the classroom and rehearsal room and from giving lessons to my students each day. I hugely enjoy helping them to overcome any difficulties they experience with a variety of different methods, cultivating their passion for music and keeping them motivated.

I believe my time at the RNCM will be stimulating and inspiring and I cannot wait for my first ever visit to Manchester!
